HP Readies Low-Cost Mini Laptops
Tuesday, April 8, 2008
By bMighty.com Staff
Hewlett-Packard is poised to enter the market for small, lightweight laptops with models geared for education but whose price point could also appeal to SMBs.
The 2133 Mini-Note, to go on sale later this month, will come in a $500 version running on Linux, and a $600 version running on Windows Vista. The models are wireless- and multimedia-enabled, weigh around 2-1/2 pounds, sport a 4-GB flash hard drive and 8.9-inch diagonal screen, and are equipped with two battery options. Absent, however, is an optical drive for DVDs and CD-ROMs, as well as any kind of productivity software, such as for word processing and spreadsheets.
The Mini-Note is expected to compete with Intel's Classmate PC and Asus' EE PC, both of which cost less than HP's offering.
