Virtualization vendor ScaleMP has come up with a way to connect multiple x86 machines into one powerful computer, providing a high-performance computing solution at a price affordable to midsize companies.

vSMP Foundation Standalone, lets customers connect two off-the-shelf dual-socket Intel Xeon-based systems to make one four-socket system. The result is a symmetric multiprocessor computer that costs less than $10,000--70 percent less expensive than standard four-socket systems--and uses 25 percent less power and 50 percent less rack space than other solutions.

According to analyst Jeffrey Hill of the Aberdeen Group, joining computers together in this way ordinarily requires IT expertise beyond what small and midmarket companies possess, he said. He said that ScaleMP makes high-performance computing affordable and easy enough that it becomes obtainable for a workgroup within a midsize business.
