Recession Update: Waiting For The Other Shoe To Drop

Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, Apr 21, 2008, 07:33 PM ET

Today's economic climate is all about uncertainty. On the one hand, outside of the housing/finance sector, many businesses seem to be doing just fine. On the other hand, everyone seems petrified that an unavoidable economic meltdown is hurtling toward us at warp speed.

According to a new National Small Business Association survey, 50% of those surveyed say “economic uncertainty is one of the most significant challenges they face." And 45% expect
a recession in the next year, while another 45% expect a flat economy. Less than 10 percent anticipate economic growth.

Yikes!

But even as 71% believe the economy is worse today than it was 5 years ago, 70% remain confident in the future of their business (but that's down from 81% last year). The insecurity is concentrated in the smallest firms: only 64% of companies with fewer than 5 employees express confidence in their future.

That's not all the confusing news. According to another recent survey -- from B2B CFO -- less than 10% of business owners and CEOs are concerned about the economy. In fact, those surveyed project a 27.8% increase in sales and plan to significantly add to their employment base.

What does all this add up to? Like I said, it's uncertain.
