Mobile Collaboration and Data Sharing, Without Exchange

Posted by Alan Zeichick Saturday, Jul 19, 2008, 09:07 PM ET

Want to share documents with colleagues? Want to be able to access them whether you're on a desktop, notebook or iPhone? That generally calls for a collaboration server, such as Microsoft's Exchange Server. The iPhone 3G's updated software is being heavily promoted as being interoperable with Exchange. But that doesn't mean that you need an Exchange server in order to share documents with coworkers. You can use a much simpler hosted system like HyperOffice instead.

I wrote about HyperOffice briefly on July 9 ("Third Party Solutions Target iPhone 3G Users"), but wanted to share more info about it. My comments, which described it primarily as an Exchange alternative, didn't really explain the hosted software adequately.

What HyperOffice does is eliminate the need to keep e-mailing documents back and forth. You access it via your browser — Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, whatever. Go to the HyperOffice site, and when you log in, you can access, and sync, documents, e-mail, calendars and contact lists.

Plus, according to the company, you can retrieve, share and update address books, projects and tasks, and manage documents with online storage, versioning, user rights and commenting. The software also provides discussion groups, security and backup, and spam/virus filtering on e-mail.

The iPhone-specific features are in beta right now. Check 'em out!
