Attention, Workout Enthusiasts: The iPhone Is Here to iPump You Up!

The latest application of the iPhone (or iPod touch): a personal trainer program called iPump Total Body. It is here to pump you up!

The iPump software, available through the iTunes App Store for $2.99, contains workout videos and exercise log programs that are designed to make exercise more fun. According to Chris Schlossberg, president of PumpOne, which made the software, "The clear exercise videos, crisp fitness images and quick intuitive interface show a user exactly what exercises to perform, in what order and with the proper intensity. Plus, you can enjoy your music while training with the application."

iPump offers three exercise levels, called Foundation, Intermediate and Comprehensive, each with three gym workouts. The exercises in each workout target all major muscle groups and include workout-specific intensity charts showing reps, sets and rest intervals.

To make the program more fun, there are 80 videos, with male and female instructors, showing the proper form for the exercises, along with audio coaching and image demonstrations. If you follow along with the videos, they'll keep you in tune with the proper number of repetitions and rests.

As you do the exercises, the software logs the work — and even lets you email the logs to your friends or to a personal trainer or doctor. (The videos are streamed over the Internet, so you'll need either a WiFi connection or good 3G data connection for them to work.)

Of course, if you really want to be pumped up, watch Hans and Franz. This six-minute YouTube video is a classic!
