Video: bMighty/Spiceworks Panels Show How To Keep Up With Technology & Justify IT

Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, Nov 10, 2008, 09:30 AM ET

There's nothing like talking technology with like-minded folks, and I recently got the chance when I moderated a couple of panels at Spiceworks' first annual user conference. And now you can watch video of both sessions!

In addition to my two sessions, there was also plenty of time at Spiceworld to talk about the little things that IT folks think about. For more on that, don't miss What IT Folks REALLY Think.

My first session, Keep Up With IT: Dealing With Changing Technology, was all about how IT folks can stay abreast of the latest technology. Obviously, we think bMighty.com is a great place to do that, but the Web is only one of the ways to stay current. Out in the real world, IT folks spend a lot of time talking to their friends, and listening to vendors, integrators and consultants. And IT folks are starting to turn to user groups and social networks for key information.

Panelists included
* Daniel Scallion, IT Director, StoneGate Senior Care
* Richard Morton, Chief Administrative Executive, The InvestLinc Group
* Alan McCullough, CEO, Zen Information Technologies
* Indika (Indy) Boteju, Mid-Market Solutions Advisor, Microsoft

The second session, Make IT Count: Showing Your Value To The Business, dealt with the ongoing issue of how make technology a strategic partner in the business, not just a cost center. Predictably, there was plenty of frustration on this topic, but also a real understanding that for IT to be successful, it has to deliver more than just "keeping the lights on."

Panelists included
* Justin Dorfman, IT Director, Western Costume
* Eric Osterholm, Director of Professional Services, OuterNet
* Paul Baker, CFO, Troux Technologies
* Kris Bushover, IT Administrator, Spiceworks

The video production values aren't the highest on either of these videos, but you may find it interesting to get some insight into how other IT folks are dealing with common issues. You can also check out this complete Spiceworld wrap-up, with keynote sessions, tips on running a sound IT shop, as well as lots of detailed information on Spiceworks.

I thought Spiceworks did a great job with their inaugural event, and I had a great time checking out Austin, TX. I even got a chance to snarf some Texas BBQ and check out a legendary Texas performer Ray Wylie Hubbard.
