When I was a newly minted programmer, we programmed in FORTRAN (it was all capital letters then), COBOL and other geeky languages like that. C was pretty new, and C++ hadn't been invented. BASIC was around, but it was a teaching language for universities.

If you were doing business computing, you used COBOL or RPG, a report-writing language. If you were doing scientific or engineering work, you used FORTRAN.

Taking Mac Sync To A Level Beyond MobileMe

The fastest and easiest way to keep multiple Macintosh computers synchronized is to use MobileMe, Apple's cloud-based service. However, MobileMe is focused 100% around the Mac's built-in apps, like Safari, Address Book, iCal and Mail. It's not going to do you much good if you prefer other applications, like Firefox or Microsoft Entourage. It also won't help you if you want to sync Mac data with Windows machines. Plus, it's not cheap, at $99/user/year for the service.

On Election Day, the Federal Communications Commission (let's hope all the employees had time to vote) was quite busy. After months of deliberation and having sparked a considerable amount of controversy, the federal agency opened up one more chunk of wireless spectrum for mobile communications.

The word is "wow": Apple's fiscal quarterly results, announced about a week ago, showed revenue of $7.9 billion, and net quarterly profits of $1.14 billion. With a 34.7% profit margin, you can see why the company's making money hand over fist.
