Fujitsu Bolsters BX900 Blade Servers With New ServerView Virtualization Management Software

Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, May 11, 2009, 01:01 PM ET

The ServerView Resource Coordinator VE Software for Virtualization Management is positioned as a complement to Fujitsu' new Primergy BX900 Blade Servers, which are aimed at small to medium enterprises.

Manuel Martull, Fujitsu's senior director of product marketing for servers, said the new software offers a single point of management for all physical and virtual resources. More automated than its competitors, Mantell said, ServerView can execute a failover operation withou human intervention.

The big difference, Martull added, is that Fujitsu has extended ServerView to cover rack servers and products from third-party vendors. For those vendors with larger marketshare, Martull said, "that doesn't seem to be an area of interest for them." While Fujitsu hopes to sell 500,000 server units in 2010, it trails far behind HP, Dell and others in server market share.

The BX900 Blade Servers, meanwhile, put Intel's new Xeon 5500 chips into a brand new enclosure. Martull said the new enclosure gives Fujitsu a leg up on vendors still using 3-year-old server enclosures by cramming up to 18 blades into a 10-unit enclosure. He claimed power and cooling savings fo 20% - 30% compared to other servers using the same Xeon 5500 processors. BX900 prices start at $10,971 for an enclosure with one processor blade with 2GB of RAM.
