Netgear Pushes Deeper Into SMB Storage
Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, May 11, 2009, 09:41 AM ET
In case you haven't noticed, networking vendor Netgear has been working on hard on diversifying into security and storage, and the latest results are the ReadyNAS 2100 rack-mounted storage appliance and ReadyNAS Remote Secure Access.
Netgear's ReadyNAS 2100 is a unified storage solution (offering simultaneous NAS and SAN) in a 4-bay 1U system that delivers twice the performance of Netgear's earlier ReadyNAS 1100 (using embedded Intel processors, it boasts read/write throughput over 70MB/s). Designed for SMBs, the ReadyNAS 2100 architecture supports both file sharing and virtualization applications, and allows uninterrupted capacity expansion and managed ports that enable redundancy or network traffic management. Mark Song, Netgear's product line manager, said that although it's not hot-swappable, the ReadyNAS 2100's X-Change module lets you replace a power supply and motherboard in about 10 minutes -- and a single X-Change module can be used to service multiple ReadyNAS units.
Pricing starts at $1,900 for RNRX4450 with 2TB of storage. As higher capacity drives become available, the 2100 will scale to hold up to 8TB.
Now a standard feature on all ReadyNAS systems, ReadyNAS Remote is a drag-and-drop remote access tool for both Windows and Mac users working in remote and branch offices. It lets remote users easily access central files via a secure (encrypted) direct connection with no firewall configuration and no hassles with VPNs, FTP access, or HTTPS Web access. Song says it's the industry's first release of a capability like this.
