SMB-Size Online Fileserver Comes To Mac

Posted by Jake Widman Thursday, Jul 23, 2009, 03:22 PM ET

The collaboration and file sharing service NomaDesk, already available for Windows, is now available for the Mac as well. And a new iPhone extension enables file access and remote management.

NomaDesk calls its service "the world's first virtual fileserver that enables both online and offline document management." It combines online file storage and backup with unusual security and convenience features.

For example, the FileLink feature enables companies to distribute files by e-mailing a download link rather than sending the file as an attachment. In the other direction, the Email2Folder feature lets users send files to the server via e-mail.

On the security side, NomaDesk encrypts files not only on the server but also on the local computer. And the TheftGuard feature enables users to remotely "shred" the data on a lost or stolen computer. The TheftGuard capability, as well as the Email2Folder feature, are also built into the iPhone extension. The iPhone is also able to retrieve files from the online server.

Since NomaDesk is also available for Windows, it permits cross-platform file sharing and collaboration. NomaDesk for Mac and the iPhone extension are currently available as free beta products from the NomaDesk website. The Windows version comes in two packages: the Personal Fileserver supports up to five computers and only costs $50 per year, but it doesn't permit file sharing with guests and doesn't have the Email2Folder feature. The Team Fileserver supports an unlimited number of computers and an unlimited number of guests, and, of course, comes with Email2Folder. At $15 per month, it's an attractively priced option for small and medium businesses.
