Warrillow & Co. says small busineses are a whopping 700% more likely to use use Twitter than other social networks when looking for promotions and discounts.

According to Warrillow, "Twitter blew away traditional social networks" when it comes to finding promotions and discounts. Generation X and baby boomer business owners were seven times more likely to use Twitter to find deals and among GenY business owners, Twitter was favored 35 to 1!

Warrillow says Twitter's "transactional nature" makes it better suite to being a marketing channel. And the consultants note Intuit and Infusionsoft are two front runners in on Twitter in Small Business, noting that both have dedicated a position (or at least portion of a position) to Twitter marketing:

"Infusionsoft and Intuit also use multiple Twitter accounts to separate out information and exchanges. Both delineate customer service vs. general information/sales tweets; Intuit goes a step further and uses an "IntuitDeals" account specifically for promotions."

And Warrillow advises Twitter marketers to "Resist the urge to create a high volume of tweets - instead, get a few interesting posts out per day and then be ready to react to and engage your followers."

The advice makes sense, but I'm not convinced that Twitter is the only way to go. For instance, Warrillow also asked small business owners about their preferred usage of social media for uses ranging from gathering information to business networking to problem resolution -- but hasn't yet released those results.
