Avaya Tweaks Its Aura Virtual VoIP Platform For SMBs

Posted by Fredric Paul Tuesday, Oct 13, 2009, 01:50 PM ET

In yet another attempt to bring Unified Communications to midsize companies, the SMB version of Aura combines several Avaya UC technologies on a single server to make it affordable for smaller companies.

The Enterprise version of Avaya Aura was launched in May, but Aura midsize is aimed at companies with between 100 and 2,400 employees -- and up to 250 locations -- who can't afford multiple physical UC servers. That target includes larger companies than we at bMighty normally think of as midmarket, but it also clearly hits SMBs as well.

The Avaya Aura System Platform -- a "certified bundle," not an appliance -- can run the full versions Avaya Communication Manager, Voice Messaging, SIP Enablement Services, Application Enablement Services, Utility Services and Media Services, the company said. And Avaya plans to make virtualization a center piece of its application distribution strategy. One side benefit: By virtualizing UC on a single server, Avaya promises a 75% cut in power requirements, plus simpler installation and maintenance.

The product comes in a $60 per user Standard Edition and an Enterprise edition that includes Avaya Unified Communications All Inclusive, which provides functions in offices, on mobile devices and in remote locations. The Enterprise Edition is priced according to company size.
