Microsoft IE Patch Due Today -- Once It's Out, Do The Microsoft IE Patch Today

Posted by Keith Ferrell Thursday, Jan 21, 2010, 09:46 AM ET

The fact that the patch for the high-buzz IE vulnerability is being released "out-of-band" is an indication of Microsoft's concern -- both for the vulnerability and no doubt for the rising negative buzz chorus as well. Either way, it's up to you to get your browsers patched, the sooner the better.

Microsoft's patch for the Internet Explorer (IE) vulnerability is labeled critical, and the fact that the company is releasing the patch "out-of-band" (out of its regular "Patch Tuesday" cycle) reinforces the label.

Further reinforcement lies in the news that Microsoft's defensive measures in some versions of IE have been found vulnerable themselves.

The vulnerability, exploited in recent attacks on Google and other companies, has gotten a lot of press, as much for the role it played in recent Chinese exploits as for its nature.

That nature can give hackers remote execution access to compromised systems.

Microsoft's advance advisory notice on the patch is here.

Technical details on the patch are here.

Getting the patch deployed to all of your systems -- and the systems of employees who work from home or on non-company equipment -- is in your hands.

Patch 'em up!
