Cisco has been busy lately, wedging itself into new markets, such as energy management and integrated network, server, and data storage devices. Yet, the company has not pushed its bread and butter, switches and routers, completely to the backburner. In fact, the vendor made a broad suite of enhancements to those devices under its Borderless Network initiative.

Smartphones Shows Signs of Recovery

After struggling most of the year, smartphones ended 2009 with robust growth, according to market research firm ABI Research. While sales of the devices had shown minimal growth through the first nine months, they jumped by 25 in the fourth quarter, so small and medium businesses need to get ready to effectively manage these devices.

Meraki Enhances Wireless Cloud Service Security

Polycom Adds Another Partner

Broadband Sales Pick Up

A year they would like to forget, this is how network equipment providers would describe 2009. While sales of broadband access systems declined 12 percent for the year, they showed signs of life as the year closed: Dell’Oro Group determined that revenue increased by double digits in the fourth quarter of the year.

Rich Get Richer in Ethernet Switch Marketplace

Consolidation has been the watchword in the Ethernet switch market. With growth rates slowing and competition increasing, vendors have been trying to gain size in order to weather the changes. Such an outlook is being made for good reason. Market research firm Dell’oro Group found that revenue for giants Cisco, HP, and Juniper increased $600 million in the last quarter, leaving few leftovers for the remaining suppliers.
