Mark Canepa Of Extreme Networks: Networking Devices For Smaller Businesses

Extreme Networks, which develops network infrastructure devices, made its first foray into the small and midsize business market with its Summit X150 line of switches. bMighty wanted to understand why the company is paying attention to this market, what are the challenges and opportunities it sees in the small to midsize market, and, perhaps most significantly, what small and midsize businesses can expect from the company and the networking industry, going forward.

bMighty: How is meeting the needs of a small or midsize business different from working with larger enterprises?

Canepa: The technologies deployed in the large and small companies are similar. What a vendor like us has to recognize is that the knowledge base found in the smaller enterprise may not be as sophisticated as the one seen in the larger enterprise. You have to be sure that your products are easy to deploy; basically they need to come out of the box working or requiring minimal configuration.
