9 Overrated Technologies For Growing Companies

Too often, the hottest technologies ride on nothing more than hot air. Don't confuse good looks, marketing hype, or even dominant market share with value. Many of the most familiar, popular, and widely used technologies cultivate cachet they just don't deserve. Here's bMighty's picks for nine overblown technologies that just don't deliver the goods for business.

Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile

Just because Windows dominates the desktop doesn't mean it's the best operating system for smart phones and other mobile devices. Heck, a lot of people don't think Windows is an acceptable desktop OS. But even as Windows Mobile pops up on more and more devices, more and more users are getting more and more frustrated.

Given the other choices out there, including the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, even the aging Palm OS, Windows Mobile comes across as clunky, slow, bloated, confusing, and hard to use, with important functions -- like making a phone call! -- buried deep in submenu after submenu.

Oh, and that built-in Web browser? Please. Sure, the browsers built into the Palm and BlackBerry aren't prizes, either, but Mobile IE may be the slowest, least compatible smartphone browser ever. And many users report serious stability problems, especially with syncing.

It's not all Microsoft's fault. Windows Mobile's greatest strength is that it runs on so many different phones and supports so many third-party applications. But that's also its biggest weakness, as it ends up compromising to do so many things that it ends up not doing any of them very well.

And here's the kicker. It's ugly. Double ugly, in fact. Windows Vista at least makes an effort to look good, but Windows Mobile is an interface only a mother could love.

But somebody seems to like it, as it keeps showing up in smartphone after smartphone. There's no accounting for taste.
