What, you thought we were going to pick the iPhone? Sure, we love the iPhone. Heck, everyone loves the iPhone. But the iPhone debuted last year, and T-Mobile's Android-powered G1 is brand new for 2008 -- and it offers some really cool features of its own.

In addition to a touch screen, for example, it sports a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a trackball. There's a slick 3.2-megapixel camera. And it takes microSD cards, so you can cheaply and easily expand its memory to 8 GB. On the software side, the G1 is tightly integrated with several popular Google applications, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, and Calendar, and a new Android Market for applications. And it downloads regular MP3s from Amazon, not iTunes' DRM-crippled versions.

Still, right now the iPhone is a more appealing device. The real reason we chose HTC's G1 is that it's the first manifestation of Google's Android mobile operating system, which promises to unlock a flood of hardware and software options. If that actually comes to pass, then our choice will look smart and prescient. If not... did we mention that we love the iPhone?
