9 Power Problems That Can Unplug Your Business

Who knew power was so complicated? A recent conversation with power expert Fred Miller at Eaton revealed that there are not one, not two, but nine different kinds of power problems that can cause trouble for your computers and servers. And each one requires different levels of protection.

Harmonic Distortion: Distortion Of The Normal Waveform Generally Transmitted By Non-Linear Loads

You probably know harmonic distortion from its role in music, but it turns out that sound waves and electrical waves are very similar. Just as music degrades when the normal wave form is altered, power can be similarly compromised by distortion introduced by devices on the power grid. In fact, harmonic distortion in the power supply increased dramatically when the power grid began adding more and more electronic office equipment, electronically controlled household appliances, and variable speed motor drives like those used in manufacturing.

Over the past 5 years, better power supplies in these devices have reduced this problem, but too much harmonic distortion could cause computers to stop working.

Solution:
An online UPS can filter out harmonic distortion from your power line.
