Windows 7 promises to fight crime, cure cancer, and remove unwanted hair. But what does it really do for small and midsize companies? To find out, page through bMighty's exclusive visual guide to Windows 7's SMB features.
One of the hardest things for overburdened IT folks at small and midsize businesses -- OK, IT folks at any size business -- is trying to help users solve problems that they can't properly describe. The hard part is that for many users, that means almost any problem they encounter.
Windows 7 includes a clever feature to help deal with that, called the Problem Steps Recorder.
If a user experiences a problem, instead of trying to remember what caused it and all the various error messages generated, they can turn on the Recorder and then repeat the process caused the problem. The Recorder automatically captures what the user clicks and grabs screens at every stage so it's easy to see exactly what happened. Then, it packages it all up in an Zip file of an XML page that can be sent to IT folks to examine and diagnose the problem. You can view the report as a long page or as a slideshow, or look at the XML source to see detail down to mouse co-ordinates.
The Problem Step Recorder was invaluable in creating the Windows 7 slide show you're looking at right now. To get there, type Problem Steps Recorder -- or PSR - in the Windows 7 search field.
