Mobility Demand, Satisfaction Surging Among Smaller Companies

November 7, 2007
By Rusty Weston

Exclusive new bMighty research reveals how -- and why -- smaller businesses are actually using mobility technologies. From the consumerization of business mobility to which vendors best satisfy users, the results may surprise you.

Few small or midsize businesses experience the mobility and growth pains of neoIT, a consulting company on the outskirts of Silicon Valley. This fast growing company currently equips 47 of its 50-member team with RIM Blackberrys and very little permanent infrastructure. No one has a desktop computer "- it's all laptops.

"We got more efficient, more productive, and saved money. That's the beauty of mobile technology as far as I'm concerned," says neoIT CEO Eugene Kublanov, who recently moved from California to Connecticut, but hasn't missed a beat.

Not every smaller company shares neoIT's evangelical fervor over mobility. But according to an exclusive new bMighty Research study of 543 business and technology professionals from small and midsize businesses, the ranks of the true believers are growing quickly.

"Mobile computing devices, backed by wireless voice and data networks, are a ubiquitous and intrinsic part of small and midsize business computing infrastructure and strategy," states the report, called Mobility in Small and Midsize Companies. Conducted in September, the online survey features managers at companies with 50 to 1,500 employees.

According to the bMighty Research Report:

  • Spending is up. Three out of five smaller companies expect spending on mobile technology to increase in the next 12 months.
  • Satisfaction is real. Three out of five respondents are highly satisfied with their companies' investment in wireless voice and data technology or services.
  • Wireless networks are pervasive. Forty-two percent of small and midsize companies are deploying a wireless network across the whole office or campus, and 36% are deploying in a limited manner, for example in conference rooms. Only 22% do not have one.
  • Lack of energy is a key concern. The most widely reported challenge facing smaller companies is insufficient battery life, which was cited by 71% of respondents.
