6 Mobile Operating Systems For Your Business

As small and midsize businesses increasingly go mobile, they grow more reliant on smartphones. And not all smartphones are built equally. The brains behind the device -- the OS -- determines what the phones are capable of and which business functions you can run. Here are six of the most popular mobile operating systems.

BlackBerry OS

Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS was designed to be intuitive and actually for business use. And that's likely why it commands 15.2% of mobile OS market share, and users have long been addicted to their "CrackBerrys" -- it's fast. Improvements in the past year have included faster Web browsing, faster start-up time, improved camera quality, YouTube support, an added video camera, HTML e-mails, voice recording, and improved UI for the media player.

Version 4 of the operating system provides a subset of MIDP 2.0 and allows complete wireless activation and synchronization with Microsoft Exchange's e-mail, calendar, tasks, notes, and contacts. It also adds support for Novell GroupWise and Lotus Notes. Recently, the BlackBerry OS has seen a surge in third-party applications and has been improved to offer full multimedia support. Third-party developers can write software using these APIs and proprietary BlackBerry APIs, but any application that makes use of certain restricted functionality must be digitally signed so it can be associated to a developer account at RIM. That signing procedure guarantees the authorship of an application, but doesn't guarantee the quality or security of the code.
